SANDY HOSIER: Over to Joe Sockic now with some cricket news and Joe, the T20… World… Cups is on… isn’t it?

JOE SOCKIC: It’s just wrapped up Sandy, where’ve you been mate! After a short Covid delay of two years, the short-form cricket World Cup took Australia by storm, unless of course you played for Australia, the defending champions pretty much sleeping through their group stage matches before being knocked out of their home tournament pre-finals. The real excitement was provided by over 90,000 Indians and Pakistanis who crammed into the mighty MCG in Melbourne to watch their teams slug it out in a thrilling group match. The Indians needed an unlikely 31 runs off the final 12 balls, but Virat Kholi and Ravi Ashwin got the Indians over the line on the final ball of the game.

SANDY: Great, cricket’s great, is that it Joe?

JOE: No, no, there’s more Sands! Over 750,000 people attended matches throughout the tournament, and while the Indians just fell short of meeting their Pakistani rivals for the finals, England stepped in and won the final in front of 80,462 people, their second T20 World Cup title with Sam Curran being named player of the match and of the tournament. Bloody fantastic stuff!

SANDY: Ok thanks Joe…

JOE: No there’s still more Sands, we’re doing the SportsWrap now…

SANDY: Err, ok – But NO CRICKET!

  1. The World Series of American Baseball wrapped up with the Houston Astros beating the Philadelphia Phillies 4 games to 2 in the best of 7 series. Game four will be remembered for its no-hitter, the third in MLB postseason history, where the Phillies failed to hit the ball for the entire game. Thrilling stuff.
  2. The race that stops the nation took place in Melbourne, Gold Trip winning the famous 3200m handicap by a length and a half giving jockey and perennial big race bridesmaid Mark Zahra his first Melbourne cup win. Get on the Pastitsi’s son!
  3. And the Fifa World Cup begins in Qatar, the qataris pulling a fast one on spectators by banning the sale of beer on the eve of the first match! How anyone’s gonna get through a game of soccer without beer is anyone’s guess. And there you go, that is sport Sandy.

SANDY: Thanks Joe. Maybe less cricket next time, hey?
